How do I sign up?

Open the signup form and pick a plan. Every plan runs through Stripe Checkout and charges on signup; there is no trial. Your account is created when you submit the form and stays inactive until the first charge succeeds.

Do I need to verify my email?

Yes. You can browse the dashboard right after signup, but you cannot create a hosted mailbox, order a domain, or send until you click the verification link we email you. Logging in does not require verification.

For a hosted mailbox, the fastest way: Verify your email. Create a mailbox on a Sairaph domain (sairaph.email, sai.email, or sent.ac). It is active immediately - no domain order, no DNS, no wait. Issue a per-inbox API key (read or read+write) and call the REST send endpoint with it as a bearer token, or wire the MCP server into your agent. What is the outbound cap, and what happens if I hit it?

On Swarm, messages above the cap are metered and billed per extra message at the rate shown on the pricing page. On the Starter, Agent, and Entrepreneur plans, sending pauses when you reach the cap and resumes when your billing period resets. The counter resets at the start of each billing period. External mailboxes send through your provider and do not count against this cap.

Is there a free trial or a free tier?

Why isn't there a free tier?

Two honest reasons. First, a free tier on sending infrastructure is a magnet for throwaway-identity abuse: disposable accounts that send spam or burn through mailboxes damage the shared sending reputation that every customer's deliverability depends on, so keeping entry behind a real payment is a deliverability decision as much as a commercial one. Second, every mailbox costs real money to run: hosted storage, a managed sending identity, DKIM, suppression, and the relay all cost something per mailbox, whether or not the mailbox is busy. So the entry plan, Starter, is priced low but not free. What you get for it is the same full product, not a stripped-down trial: the same per-customer encryption, native MCP, real-time inbound, managed deliverability, and EU data residency that every larger plan runs. The price buys access to the whole platform at the smallest size, not a limited preview of it.

What happens if my card is declined during signup?

Your account is kept, so you do not re-enter your details, but it stays inactive. Return via the retry link to start a fresh Checkout session with the same plan; you do not re-type your password.

Reactivate any time from the dashboard, which mints a fresh Checkout session and sets the account back to active.

Plans from Agent up include a first-domain credit toward registration (Starter is brand-domain only and does not include a custom domain). When you search, each result shows what you will pay: cheaper domains read Included (the credit covers the first-year registration), while pricier or premium domains show a +€X (the difference between their price and your credit). The same domain can read "Included" on one plan and "+€X" on another, because the credit differs by tier and by billing interval (annual plans carry a larger first-domain credit than monthly). The price you see at selection is the price you pay.

Do I pay to renew my domain?

How long does a domain order take?

Domain provisioning is asynchronous. After you place the order we poll OVH until registration completes. Most orders complete quickly, but registry processing can take longer; the dashboard shows live status.

Hosted mailboxes default to a Sairaph domain (sairaph.email, sai.email, or sent.ac) and need no setup. If you want a custom address, you can: connect a domain you own - we give you the DNS records to add at your current registrar or DNS host (MX plus a DKIM key), you publish them, and we verify the domain before it can host mailboxes. Once verified it behaves like a managed domain, with DKIM signing, suppression, and the SES relay handled for you. The first-domain credit covers first-year registration on a domain you buy through us; a domain you bring has nothing to register, so the credit does not apply to it. Transfer-in (moving a domain's registration over to us) is planned for a later release.

How is inbound mail synced?

Incoming mail on a hosted mailbox is synced over IMAP. A long-lived IDLE watcher reacts to new mail in near real time, and a periodic poll (about once a minute) is the fallback if the live connection drops, so messages arrive without you polling manually. The hosted store is authoritative; what we keep is a cache for fast reads.

How long are messages kept?

Message envelopes (sender, subject, date, snippet, message-id) are kept indefinitely so search keeps working. Full message bodies are cached for faster reads and then evicted on a per-tier schedule. The maximum retention you can set per mailbox is capped by your plan, with the ceiling rising on the higher tiers; the exact per-tier limit is on the pricing page (mail.sairaph.com/pricing). New mailboxes start at the default retention, clamped down to your plan's cap where that is lower. Evicting a cached body does not delete the message; a request for an evicted body falls back to a live IMAP fetch, which is slightly slower.

Are my mailbox credentials stored securely?

Yes. The SMTP/IMAP passwords behind each hosted mailbox are encrypted at rest with a per-customer Fernet key and are never returned by any API response or written to logs. Your agent authenticates to Sairaph Mail with a mailbox API key, not with the underlying mailbox password.

Can I read a message body on demand?

Yes. Message bodies are served from cache by default; you can also request a live fetch with ?live=true (useful for agents waiting on an OTP). Live fetches are rate-limited per mailbox to protect the upstream IMAP service, and if the store is unreachable a live request falls back to cached data rather than failing.

What is the maximum message / attachment size?

A single fetched message (envelope plus body) is capped at 25 MiB; mail larger than that cannot be retrieved in full. For sending, a message may carry up to 10 attachments, and the combined size (body plus attachments) must be 25 MiB or less.

How is outbound mail sent?

Outbound mail is relayed through Amazon SES (eu-west-1, Dublin). Your send call returns immediately with a server-generated Message-Id; a background worker then delivers the message via SES, with retries, so a transient failure does not lose your mail. Delivered mail goes to recipients anywhere, so it leaves the EU in transit. Inbound mail arrives at your hosted mailbox.

Why do I need DKIM, and how is it set up?

DKIM signing proves your mail is authorised to come from your domain and is required for inbox placement. We publish the DKIM CNAME records on your managed domain automatically and poll SES until the domain's sending identity is verified. You cannot send from a domain until its sending identity is verified.

What happens when a message bounces or is reported as spam?

Hard bounces and complaints are processed automatically. The recipient address is added to that mailbox's suppression list, so we stop mailing an address that rejects or reports your mail. Suppression is per-mailbox: suppressing a recipient on one mailbox does not affect your other mailboxes. You can remove a recipient from a mailbox's suppression list via the API or MCP.

What are the bounce-rate guard rails?

We track each mailbox's bounce-and-complaint rate over a rolling 14-day window. Above a sustained 3%, the mailbox is throttled to 10% of its tier's send quota and you are emailed an alert. Above 5%, sending from that mailbox is hard-disabled until support clears it. These thresholds protect the shared sending reputation.

My mailbox was send-disabled, how do I re-enable it?

Accepted Answer

A mailbox hard-disabled by the bounce-rate guard cannot re-enable itself. Open a support ticket; once the list-hygiene issue is resolved, support can clear the mailbox. You cannot work around a hard-disable by deleting the mailbox and recreating the same address. Recreating an address re-applies its prior suppression list and any bounce-guard send-disable, so a burned address stays burned; only support can clear it.

Can I delete and recreate a mailbox?

Yes. Deleting a mailbox frees its tier slot, so you can recreate it (the same address or a different one) within your plan's mailbox limit. Two things to know: Delete is permanent and destructive. It revokes the hosted mailbox (SMTP/IMAP stops immediately), destroys that mailbox's cached messages, and orphans the API keys bound to it. A recreated mailbox is a new identity with new keys; re-key your agent after recreating. Recreating the same address is rate-limited. To stop delete/recreate cycling, recreating the same address is limited (a short cooldown after a delete, and a cap per rolling 30-day window). Normal ephemeral-identity workflows stay well under the limit. Over the limit returns a 429 with a retry window.

Is there a sending quota?

Yes. Each paid plan has a monthly outbound cap (see the Plans & limits FAQ). At about 80% of your monthly cap we email a quota warning, once per billing period, so you can pace your sends or upgrade. Who is the API for?

The primary user of Sairaph Mail is an AI agent. An agent drives the full mailbox surface over REST with a scoped API key; no human session required. With a management key, REST does everything the dashboard can: order domains, edit DNS, create/delete mailboxes, manage billing, mint API keys, and register webhooks. MCP exposes a subset: a single mailbox's actions and reads as tools, not the full tenant surface (domain order, DNS edits, mailbox create/delete, billing, key minting, and webhooks stay REST/management-only). The dashboard is an admin and debug surface, not a daily-driver mail client.

How do I authenticate to the REST API?

Send your API key as a bearer token on every request: ``` Authorization: Bearer sm_live_. ``` The base URL is https://mail.sairaph.com/api/v1. Keys carry their own scopes, so the key alone authenticates and authorises the call; you never log in or carry a dashboard session to use REST. A request with a missing or insufficient scope returns 403 insufficient_scope.

What kinds of API keys are there?

Two tiers. Per-inbox keys (sm_live_ prefix) are bound to exactly one mailbox and can touch only that mailbox's data. Two roles: read - read-only mailbox access (list/get messages and threads, read drafts, search, list folders/labels, read attachments, bounces, events). read+write - the read bundle plus mutate and send (move, archive, delete, mark read/unread, manage folders/labels, create and send drafts, upload attachments, send/reply/forward, manage the mailbox's suppression list). A per-inbox key cannot hold any tenant-wide (platform) permission; it can never order a domain, edit DNS, manage other mailboxes, change billing, or mint keys. Management keys (sm_mgmt_ prefix) are tenant-wide: not bound to any single mailbox, they span every inbox you own plus platform operations (managing mailboxes, ordering/configuring domains, editing DNS, billing, account profile, webhook endpoints, and API-key management). Management keys have a mandatory expiry; never is not allowed, because a non-expiring tenant-wide key is a standing risk. A management key is minted read-only by default (every *:read scope, no writes); you grant write/send scopes explicitly when you need them. Only a human dashboard session can mint a management key. Both key types take an optional name and can be listed and revoked at any time; revoking takes effect almost immediately. Per-inbox key expiry is optional (30d, 90d, 1y, or never). When one key mints another, the child cannot exceed the minter's scopes or outlive the minter's expiry.

Sending - send, reply, and forward; sends are accepted asynchronously (202) and delivered via a background worker. Threads - list and get assembled conversations, mark a whole thread read, archive a thread, and reply within a thread. Drafts - create, list, get, update, delete, and send drafts (including reply/forward pre-builds). Attachments - download attachment bytes (with range support), mint a signed download URL, and upload attachments when sending or drafting. Folders and labels - list/create/rename/delete IMAP folders; list/create/update/delete labels and assign them to messages. Search - search within one mailbox (per-inbox key) or across all your mailboxes (management key). Bounces and suppressions - read bounce history and read/manage each mailbox's suppression list. Events and webhooks - read the event feed (per-mailbox or across all your mailboxes) and, with a management key, register/manage webhook endpoints that receive signed event deliveries. We run a Model Context Protocol server so MCP-capable clients (such as Claude Desktop and remote agents) can use your mailboxes as tools over a streamable-HTTP transport at https://mail.sairaph.com/mcp/v1/mcp. The MCP tools mirror the REST surface (list and read messages, send and reply, manage threads, drafts, folders, labels, and attachments, search, read bounces/events/audit, and read your domain and DNS) and enforce the same scopes as the matching REST endpoints, so the two transports do not drift. Point your MCP client at that endpoint and authenticate with a Sairaph Mail API key.

How do idempotency and rate limits work?

Mutating requests accept an Idempotency-Key header so a retried call does not double-execute. Each API key is rate-limited per minute by plan, with the limit rising on the higher tiers; the exact per-tier figure is on the pricing page (mail.sairaph.com/pricing). Exceeding the limit returns a 429 with a Retry-After header and a structured error envelope. This per-minute limit is separate from your monthly outbound email cap; both apply independently.

What does an error response look like?

Errors use a consistent envelope with type, code, message, and an optional param, modelled on Stripe's error shape so they are easy to branch on programmatically. Common codes: insufficient_scope (403), payment_required (402, on send/provisioning when billing is not active), and email_not_verified (403).

How is my data protected?

Sensitive data is encrypted at rest. Each customer gets a dedicated Fernet key, and every sensitive field (your mailboxes' SMTP/IMAP passwords, cached message bodies, and outbound message bodies) is encrypted with that per-customer key. Underlying mailbox passwords are never returned by any API response or written to logs.

Where is my mail stored, and in what region?

Hosted mailboxes live on our self-hosted mail server in the EU; that store is authoritative. Outbound mail is relayed through Amazon SES in eu-west-1 (Dublin), and delivered mail goes to recipients anywhere, so it leaves the EU in transit. We keep a cache of message envelopes and (for a limited time) bodies for fast reads; see the Mailboxes FAQ for retention. External mailboxes you connect (via an app password you generate with your provider, not a full sign-in) stay with your provider.

Can I enable two-factor authentication?

Yes. Two-factor authentication is optional and uses TOTP (compatible with Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, Bitwarden, and similar). When you enable it you also get 10 single-use recovery codes, shown once and downloadable; keep them safe, as they are the only way back in if you lose your authenticator.

How do I delete my account?

Accepted Answer

Start account deletion from the dashboard (it requires your password, and a 2FA code if you have it enabled). Deletion runs on a 7-day grace period: Your mailbox credentials and all API keys are revoked immediately, so sending and receiving stop right away. You can still log in during the grace period to cancel the deletion. After 7 days, your per-customer encryption key is destroyed, which makes every encrypted blob permanently unrecoverable; your Stripe subscription is cancelled; and your domains are set to lapse at the end of their paid period.
